These paintings were started during a recent stay in Berlin. I was influenced by the graffiti and colorful ugliness found all around me. The color of my paintings became more acidic, the paintings more dark, and I started using silver paint for the first time after seeing silver graffiti that seemed both dull and giddily transgressive. At the same time, in response to the grayness and general state of disrepair, along with the heavy weight of history present everywhere, I wanted to throw a slight counterbalance. My cat paintings, begun in a more ironic and nonchalant vein, struggled to show elegance and delicacy, while becoming more aggressive in temperament.
